Jean Buridan

Jean Buridan, 1300-58, a French philosopher and logician, has been credited with originating probability theory. He seems to have toyed with the idea of using his theory to decide among alternative courses of action: the parable of ``Buridan's Ass'' is attributed to him, in which an ass that lacked the ability to choose starved to death when placed between two equidistant piles of hay.
