The Allen Center is a wonderful new resource for CSE. Much of what goes on there will be just like it was in lovely Sieg Hall -- after all, it's the same people with the same goals! However, the Allen Center is unlike Sieg Hall in a number of ways. In particular, the building is new, expensive and ours, and we want to keep it in good shape for a long time (since we're pretty sure the "new new" building will be just a few years out). The building was designed and built to be very warm and comfortable, using lots of cherry wood for finishing doors and window sills, using carpets almost everywhere, and so forth. Many of these materials can be easily damaged and are very expensive to repair or replace. So we'll have to treat the building with more respect and sensitivity than we have treated Sieg. There are a few aspects of the building for which there are major changes in how we do business. The Transition Team has developed web pages for each of these, and the links are on this page. (We've also listed a few links about things that won't change, as a reminder to all.) Please read them with some care. Undoubtedly we'll make adjustments to these, and find out other issues that need to be addressed after we move. But they are a great basis on which to start living in our new home. In general, we expect everybody in the community -- students, staff, faculty, visitors, and others -- to treat the Allen Center just like we treat one another, with respect and thoughtfulness. Surely problems will arise now and then, and it will be the responsibility of the entire community to help solve them and make sure our people, and our facilities, are treated in a way that makes CSE a fantastic, productive, and fun place in which to learn and work. |
