This page captures, as accurately as possible, faculty leaves of absence.

In general terms, there are two types of leaves: paid and unpaid.

Paid leaves are commonly referred to as sabbaticals. A faculty member may apply once every 7 years. If approved, the leave will be for one quarter at full pay, two quarters at 3/4's pay, or three quarters at 2/3's pay. A major issue at UW is that, although faculty members across the nation view sabbaticals as "entitlements," the Washington State Legislature places a limit on the total number of paid leaves that may be in effect at any instant -- a limit that is far below the level that would be required if every "entitled" faculty member were to request his or her sabbatical. So every year there is a great deal of nervousness, uncertainty, and jockeying.

Unpaid leaves may be requested at any time, and must be approved by the Chair (in practice, the Executive Committee), the Dean, and the Provost. We have a loose policy regarding these leaves, here. It's important for students to understand that every faculty member who requests an unpaid leave of absence, for whatever reason, makes a strong case that the leave will benefit the Department, and that his or her responsibilities (teaching, advising, etc.) will be adequately covered. These things really can't be "legislated."
