For Autumn 2011 admissions: Application review takes place after the end of Spring Quarter. Students who will finish all required 300-level CSE courses by the end of Spring Quarter may apply.

Fall 2011 Application Timeline:

  • May: Application opens
  • Early June: Application closes
  • Mid-June: Faculty recommenders submit feedback, BS/MS Admissions Committee reviews applications
  • Late June: Decisions sent

General Admissions Information

Ideally, students will apply to this program shortly after completing all required 300-level CSE courses (the end of the Junior year, typically). Admitted students will then complete their remaining bachelors requirements plus their masters requirements as a cohesive two-year plan.

We admit 10-12 students per year.

Eligibility Requirements

  • UW CSE undergraduate major
  • Junior standing or higher (90 or more credits)
  • A 3.00 GPA or higher (which must be maintained for satisfactory progress)
  • All required 300-level CSE courses complete

These are minimum requirements to apply. Competitive applicants will exceed these minimuims, typically with high grades and CSE course work beyond the minimum required 300-level courses, plus strong written components as outlined below.

Application Details

Students may apply at different points in their undergraduate degree. Most students should apply at the end of their junior year, after completing all required 300-level CSE courses. A small number of students may apply later, while finishing senior-level requirements or even after graduating; however, all studests must begin graduate courswork within one year of graduation from their bachelors. If you are unsure when to apply, contact a CSE advisor.

The application requires the following components:

  • Statement of Purpose: Your statement of purpose should be no more than one page long. Topics you may address:
    • Why are you interested in pursuing a combined BS/MS?
    • What specific aspects of the program interest you most? e.g. areas of study, overall breadth and depth (there is no wrong answer here.)
    • What makes you a good candidate?
  • References
    • List three CSE faculty members or CSE affiliates faculty as references. Students typically select faculty with whom they did research, or for whom they were TAs. Please list no more than one faculty member for whom you were a TA; the other two faculty members should be people know you through a class or research.
    • You do not need permission to provide a faculty member's name, but you should contact your references to tell them you have applied and selected them as a reference.
  • Transcripts: You must upload a copy of your UW unofficial transcript (use the "printer-friendly" pdf version from MyUW).
  • Resume: You have the option to upload a current resume.
  • MyCSE: Confirm that your MyCSE profiles is up-to-date, including scholarships, co-ops/internships, and research.
