BackgroundThe CSE department created the Combined Bachelors/Masters program in direct response to student requests, and based on industry feedback that this program would benefit future professionals. CSE undergrads wanted an opportunity to gain depth in their favorite subjects, along with increased breadth of knowledge through studying topics they couldn't fit in during their undergrad degree. Purpose and expectations for graduate studentsMost masters degrees take a couple years to complete. CSE's BS/MS students earn a masters degree with roughly one year of courses beyond standard bachelors requirements. This accelerated program works because, ideally, students begin graduate requirements during their senior year. Students should be admitted after finishing 300-level requirements, so they can plan their senior CSE requirements and graduate requirements as a coherent two-year plan. The program was created with industry-bound students in mind. A masters degree is often the most cost-effective industrial degree: the relatively short amount of time spent on a masters (and relatively low expense of one year's tuition) can bring a significant boost in compensation and job opportunities. Both starting salary and long-term prospects are improved with an advanced degree. For students headed to industry, we expect this opportunity to be efficient and effective. While the BS/MS coursework, research options, and faculty connections are valuable for all students, this program may not be necessary for many PhD-bound students. Strong students who are intent on a PhD apply should consider applying directly to PhD programs (rather than use the BS/MS as a transitional phase between undergrad and PhD). However, if you are uncertain about your plans, the combined BS/MS may help you explore your options. CSE advisers and faculty are happy to discuss these options with you. | ||||||
