UW CSE Tutored Video Pilot Project

The University of Washington's Department of Computer Science & Engineering, in collaboration with several area community colleges, is exploring a new approach to introductory computer science education.

Our experiment addresses two issues. The first is the extraordinary labor involved in preparing materials for intensive courses such as UW's CSE 142 and CSE 143 -- generically, "CS 1" and "CS 2." Can we achieve economies? The second is articulation: can we make our courses more comparable, to facilitate transfer and to improve the foundation of all students?

Lecture Files

Lectures for CSE 142 Spring Quarter are viewable on the internet as Microsoft Netshow programs.  Streams are encoded with embedded URLs pointing to lecture slides so that the slides will be synchronized with the talk.  To view a lecture, simply click on a link below.  This is a JavaScript application which integrates the video and lecture slides in one browser window.  To use the application successfully, you will need a browser version 3x or later, and at least version 6 of the Microsoft Windows Media Player.  If your browser is having trouble with frames, try the "w/o frames interface" links below.

Also availiable are zipped files of the lecture presentations. These zip files contain a higher quality video of the classroom lecture, GIFs of the slides for presentation, and a PowerPoint document containing the original slides. To view these lectures, download the file, decompress it using WinZip or another zip utility, and double click on the file named Launcher.html. Note: to view these files you will need the latest version of the Microsoft Windows Media Player. Warning: these files are large! (80-100MB) It is not recommended that you try to download them if you are accessing the Internet via a modem. We are using this porky format in order to obtain high audio and video quality.
