The Making of…

ORIGIN OF THE GODS

Image Formation Procedure:

Step 1: Begin with unadulterated picture of Grecian god!

Step 2: Use Intelligent scissors to highlight professor Seitz’s face.  Chose file->Save Mask, and save as a .tga file.  Repeat procedure just for hair.

Step 3: Open Photoshop with starry sky background image

Step 4: Open original picture and Convert Image to grayscale by choosing Image->Adjust->Desaturate.

Step 5: Open Mask file.  Drag mask over desaturated picture using move tool and snap to edges.  On Layers tool bar choose multiply & opacity =100%.

Step 6:  Contrast Hair.  The hair is a little dark, so first use the hair mask, select the hair region using the magic wand on the mask layer, then switch to the image layer.  Choose Image->Adjust ->Brightness/Contrast, set brightness to +9 and contrast to +50

Step 7: Add Noise. Noise is added to simulate starry regions in the face. Filter->Noise, choose uniform, 22

Step 7: Threshold to create mostly black and white spotty mask

Step 8: Select the face and create a new layer in star image by dragging the face onto the star image.  On the layers bar choose Multiply and the desired opacity.  In the shot to the right, a single rotated face is seen in the lower left corner with an opacity of 70%

Final Steps:  The Image is repeated at different sizes, rotations, and opacities, and some free transforms.  Additionally, masking was used to select different facial regions, ear, eye, mouth.  The hair has a particularly nebular quality about it.  The picture has approximately 20 partial and full images in it.  The picture to the left shows some of the most obvious, including eyes and an ear. An eraser tool has been used in some images to make the image more jagged.
