The assigned work this quarter falls into a set of categories:

• Five homework/programming assignments (50% total)
• Three "Mini" term papers (30% total)
• A take-home final exam (20%)

Homework and programming assignments

• Assignments that contain written and programming aspects will be given roughly every two weeks.
• Each of the five assignments will be worth 10% of the final grade.
• They must be submitted electronically in a form that we will announce later on.
• Note: You may do up to three of these assignments in pairs (the pairs can change from assignment to assignment, if you wish), doing a minimum of two of them by yourself.  If you work in pairs, both people will receive the same grade.
  
  
• Assignment 1 (due Friday January 21) --- Solutions
• Assignment 2 (due Friday February 11) --- Solutions
• Assignment 3 (due Friday February 25) --- Solutions
• Assignment 4 (due Friday March 10)

Mini term papers

• Over the course of the quarter, you are also responsible for writing three 3-5 page term papers; each is worth 10% of the grade.
  • The first one is due no later than January 25th.
  • The second one is due no later than February 22nd.
  • The third one is due no later than March 7th.
• We will post some possible topics, and you may negotiate your own with the instructor; these topics are not required to be chosen from topics we cover in class; indeed, topics beyond those covered in class are especially appreciated.  The papers will be graded on accuracy and clarity.
• In general, we expect these to be based on a reading of 2-3 papers on a specific topic in programming languages.
• Note: You may do up to two of these papers in pairs (the pairs can change from paper to paper, if you wish), doing a minimum of one of them by yourself.  If you work in pairs, both people will receive the same grade.

Take-home final exam

• On Wednesday March 8, we will make a take-home final exam (worth 20% of the final grade) available on the web.  You can choose any consecutive 3-hour period to do the exam.  It is due by 11:59PM PST on Sunday March 12, 2000.  We will provide instructions for electronic turn-in.
