CSE 190B Seminar Research Project

This project is to familiarize you with the CSE department and the technology that is emerging here at the UW. In small groups, you are to research and prepare a presentation (PowerPoint or webpage is highly recommended) that displays your understanding of a current computer-related research topic here at the UW. This presentation should give an overview of the research being conducted and presented in a manner that is relevant and informative to the class. Be creative (a little fun never hurt). Information about the topic is not limited to that on the CS webpage it can be gathered from any credible source (websites, news articles, encyclopedias, professors). The project will follow the timeline outlined below. If you have any questions donŐt hesitate to ask any of the course staff (Dieter, Dan, or Megan).

Important Dates:

á      9/24: Form groups of 3-4 students (random selection). Each group should generate 2 possible topics for a presentation they give at the end of the quarter. The topics should be related to current computer related research at the UW (See below or class web page for list of ideas).

á      10/6: Each team should send topics to Dan (danger@cs). Please include title, 2-3 abstract sentences about the topic, and 2 slides.

á      10/8: Each team has 2 minutes to advertise their topic. You are advised to use the slides you sent on 10/6, but it is not required. You may present without slides or with other slides that you made at a later time.

á      10/13: Every student will vote on the topic (s)he likes and we will choose the best topics

á      11/18: Presentation material uploaded to Turn-in page

á      11/19 and 12/3: Presentation of topics

Final Presentation Information:

The final presentationŐs format will be similar to that of the topic ÔadvertisementŐ given on October 8th. You are to construct a presentation on the topic assigned to you based on the result of the survey. Similar to before, a visual aid such as a PowerPoint is required for this presentation. You have approx 9 minutes to present this time; as a result your presentation should go more in depth. Your presentation should include one or more of the following: the goal of the research, interesting facts, the people involved (past or present), work done outside the university, potential impact, and related studies. If you are unable to find sufficient information online contacting the professor/student conducting the research to gain more information may be helpful (Many of them are busy, but others may be more than happy to sit down and talk about their work).
