CSE 456 - Storyreel and DVD Design and Production for CG Animation

Assignment #6

CSE 456 Summer 2008

For your last assignment of the quarter, work with your group to produce the best possible storyreel that would really knock everyone’s socks off as an animated short.  Use the same limitations imposed on you in Assignment #5. Use the 22 steps to produce a storyreel that I gave you in class.

Work with your team to enhance the story by tightening the steps and connecting the armature and visualizing the characters, setting and actions. Bring the characters alive using acting techniques suggested to you in class. Iterate all of the aspects of your storyboards and reel.

Add voiceover on one copy of the reel and leave the other one without a voiceover. Add foley and audio on both of them.  Meet your deadlines but leave time for improvement.

Remember to communicate and coordinate your schedules with your teammates.

Your Story person will take responsibility for the final version of the revised story and beatsheet.  The Story person will also write the credits.

Your Animation and Storyboard leads will both complete final thumbnails and storyboards for review. The Audio lead will add audio and work with the rest of the group on pacing.

The Editing leads perform the final edit.

Anyone or all of you can practice voiceovers. One will need to be recorded and added onto the last version of the reel.

The final package for your reel including all of your work will need to be sent to all four email addresses by Monday July 28th 2008.

Each group needs to plan to provide 2 copies of the reel for BOTH the voiceover and non-voiceover versions.

Please provide visual support that includes character drawings and reference photographs as it helps to bring us into your story world. Good Luck!

Again, here is the criterion we will be using to evaluate your work:

Limited to two characters.

Can be produced and understood using a 3 minute maximum length.

Story takes place in one setting and that setting is indoors.

Define your characters by assigning three adjectives to describe them.

Define a specific time and place for your story.

Provide a visual representation of the story that supports your seven steps in a way that best dramatizes your story.

Remember for your pitches – to show excitement for the story. Fall in love with the story.

Remember why it is important that this story be told and present that to the audience.

Do whatever you need to in order to bring the audience into the story experience.

Be the characters. Act it out.  Practice ahead of time.  Practice more than you think you need to.

Be Creative!!!

Also, please answer the following questions about each one of your stories:

1. Is your story as clear and succinct as you can make it?

2. Do you have a visual style in mind for your story and if so, can you describe it or provide visual reference?

3. Why should this story be told? Why would anyone care?

4.  Have you captured the visual transitions in your story? Have you captured and illustrated the the story beats?
