Description: Focusing on "constructive" learning environments involving user creation of compositions, simulations, programs, etc., and assessment, the class will work in teams to prototype novel learning tools. During the first part of the quarter, we will survey existing software systems and build some simple demonstrations. After that, each team will design and develop a full prototype. Near the end of the quarter, these will be evaluated with users from outside the class. Although the field of educational software is very large, we will be focusing on a particular part of it: interactive learning tools that work using simulation, construction, computation. These tools support learning by discovery, empirical and creative work, and they may be useful well outside the educational context. Software issues we'll touch on include designing construction sets, graphical editors, attaining software transparency, incorporating scripting languages, providing hooks for assessment, operability on the web, and human-computer interaction. We'll also participate in storyboarding, design reviews, code reviews, and software evaluation with users.
Prerequisites: Students taking the class must be CS or CE majors, and should have completed CSE 321 and/or CSE 341, or should have the instructor's permission to enroll. The projects will be written using Java.
