CSE 590GB Weekly Assignments


Each week there will approximately 6-8 papers to read (see schedule for list). After the first week, you'll be asked to submit a review of each paper you read prior to the class meeting where it will be discussed. The review will consist of 1-2 pages and will structured according to a standard template. Please mail the completed templates in ".html" format to me no later than 5pm the evening before each class meeting. In addition, you are also to complete the tasks below and be prepared to discuss them in class.

Week Assignment

  1. Visit: Google's location-based search engine and try out a few searches that you would find useful - for example, shop for something you purchased recently at a local store and see if you find a better place to have made the purchases, or a place you would not have though of. Relate your experience.
  2. Do you like the interface to the Google system? What would you change about it?

  1. Develop a list of at least three location-aware applications you'd like to see made available in our building. Provide a short description of the usage scenario including the type of people would use the application and the platform they would most likely use.

  1. Pick your favorite of the applications you thought about in week 2 and post a detailed description of it on the discussion board (see the top of the schedule page. Make sure to include: the principal users of the applications, an example scenario of the application in use, how the information needed will be collected prior to deployment and for dynamic data in real-time, what are the privacy concerns, how will it scale, etc.

  1. Talk to potential users of your application in our department. Create a basic description and questionnaire to gather some impressions/reactions to the features of your app. Share your questions with others by posting them to the app discussion b-board. What did you learn?

  1. How would you evaluate your app? Given the results of your informal user survey, what would you want as an evaluation section if you were to write a paper about your app.
