Function of pyruvate carboxylase

The protein pyruvate carboxylase is a catalyst for one step (of many) in the conversion of food molecules into ATP, a molecule that serves as a common energy carrier in the cell. In more detail, the enzyme assists the (reversible) conversion from pyruvate, bicarbonate, and ATP into oxaloacetate, ADP (sort of a reduced energy version of ATP), and phosphorus. There is a sequential set of enzyme-assisted chemical reactions which starts with a sugar molecule, glucose, and produces ATP. This set of steps commonly occurs in eukaryotes. The stage called glycolysis takes glucose and produces pyruvate, and other molecules. In eukaryotes, there is a bacteria known as mitochondria that lives in symbiosis with the cell. The mitochondria takes in pyruvate and pyruvate carboxylase in order to start a series of reactions called the citric acid cycle that eventually produces more ATP. In mammals, pyruvate carboxylase is typically expressed in greater amounts in the liver than in other tissues. In Bacillus subtilis the enzyme plays a similar role in processing glucose, however not all prokaryotes use pyruvate carboxylase [Sauer et. al, 1998; Jitrapakdee and Wallace, 1999].
