In addition, not only is that enolase, which catalyzes the dehydration reaction
of Glycolysis, found as a protein in M. leprae, but is also present in human
sperm. According to the European Journal of Cell Biology (2000, Februrary),
enolase protein is detected "in tail fractions from mature sperm." The enzyme
is also found in muscle and yeast and is important in the metabolism of
carbohydrates.
Enolase (2-phospho-D-glycerate hydrolase) is an essential glycolytic enzyme that
catalyses the interconversion of 2-phosphoglycerate and phosphoenolpyruvate.
Enolase is present as homodimers and heterodimers formed from alpa, beta, and
gamma (three distinct subunits with the same molecular weight but which differ
in their biochemical and immunological properties and tissue distribution).
Alpha is a non-neuronal enolase that is found in many adult cell types. Beta is
a musle-specific enolase that is found in muscle cells. Gamma is a neuron-
specific anolase that is expressed exclusively in neurons.
