In recent years, the number of applicants has far exceeded the number of openings for the program. More than 1,000 applications are received annually for 30-35 openings in the program. Consequently, the competition for admission is keen.

The average GPA of those offered admission for Autumn 2007 was 3.78. The average GRE scores of these applicants were: Verbal (including international applicants): 83%, Quantitative: 90%, Analytical 69%. For those who submitted scores, the average Subject Test score (not required for application) in Computer Science was 91%. Please note that these are only averages. Obviously, many admitted students' scores fall below the average. Perhaps less obviously, some students with above average scores are not accepted. While grades and test scores form an important component of an applicant's case for admission, letters of recommendation, and other factors such as undergraduate research projects, or other unusual experience that would predict excellence in graduate study, all enter into admissions decisions in a very important way. None of these components in isolation will either guarantee or preclude admission.

Applications from Minorities and Women:

The University of Washington and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering reaffirms its policy of equal opportunity regardless of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, or status as a disabled veteran or Vietnam era veteran in accordance with University policy and applicable federal and state statutes and regulations. We therefore encourage applications from women and minority candidates.

Prerequisites:

To be admitted to the graduate program in Computer Science, a student must satisfy the admissions criteria outlined in the Graduate Study section of the University of Washington General Catalog. These admissions criteria include the completion of a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 grade point average.

In addition, we expect most entering graduate students to have a solid background in computer science at least including programming experience, machine organization, data structures, discrete math, automata theory, and programming systems, e.g. the equivalent of our courses 378, 326, 321, 322, and either 401 or 451. (See the section on CSE Courses for course synopses.) However, we welcome applications from students who lack a portion of this background but who show exceptional promise, and accept a small number of these students each year.

When and How To Apply:

Applications are accepted for admission for Autumn Quarter only. The deadline for both international students and U.S. students is December 15 for the following Autumn Quarter. There are no separate deadlines for applicants who wish to request assistantships since we offer financial support to all who are admitted to he program. Admission decisions are usually made by early March, and students generally must accept or decline offers by April 15.

The department requires applicants to use the on-line application to the Graduate School and to Computer Science & Engineering. Please go to: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/grad/application_materials.html.

A complete application consists of these six (or seven) items:

  1. Graduate School Application (with required $50 application fee), both submitted on-line.
  2. Transcripts. Unofficial transcripts are uploaded into the on-line Graduate School application.
  3. Three letters of recommendation, submitted on-line in the Graduate School application.
  4. Statement of Purpose, submitted on-line in the Graduate School application.
  5. Curriculum Vitae, submitted on-line in the Graduate School application.
  6. Graduate Record Exam Scores: An official score report for the Graduate Record Exam General Aptitude Test, taken within the last 5 years, is required. UW institution code is 4854.
  7. TOEFL: An official score report for the TOEFL exam (taken within the last 2 years) is required for international students who do not have a degree from a U.S. institution.
