In recent years, the number of applicants has far exceeded the number of openings for the program. More than 1,100 applications are received annually for 30-35 openings in the program. Consequently, the competition for admission is keen. The average GPA of those offered admission for Autumn 2011 was 3.82. The average GRE scores of these applicants were: Verbal (including international applicants): 85%, Quantitative: 91%, Analytical 64%. Please note that these are only averages. Obviously, many admitted students' scores fall below the average. Perhaps less obviously, some students with above average scores are not accepted. While grades and test scores form an important component of an applicant's case for admission, letters of recommendation, and other factors such as undergraduate research projects, or other unusual experience that would predict excellence in graduate study, all enter into admissions decisions in a very important way. None of these components in isolation will either guarantee or preclude admission. Applications from Minorities and Women:The University of Washington and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering reaffirms its policy of equal opportunity regardless of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, or status as a disabled veteran or Vietnam era veteran in accordance with University policy and applicable federal and state statutes and regulations. We therefore encourage applications from women and minority candidates. Prerequisites:To be admitted to the graduate program in Computer Science, a student must satisfy the admissions criteria outlined in the Graduate Study section of the University of Washington General Catalog. These admissions criteria include the completion of a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 grade point average. [Note that we do not have a separate full-time M.S. degree program; a master's degree is integrated into the Ph.D. degree program. All applications are for the Ph.D. only] In addition, we expect most entering graduate students to have a solid background in computer science at least including software-development experience, data structures, discrete math, automata theory, programming systems, computer systems and organization (see, for example, our courses 311, 331,332, and 351), as well as advanced knowledge in one or more areas of computing (see, for example, senior-level courses). However, we welcome applications from students who lack a portion of this background but who show exceptional promise, and accept a small number of these students each year. When and How To Apply:Applications are accepted for admission for Autumn Quarter only. The deadline for both international students and U.S. students is December 15 for admission the following Autumn Quarter. There are no separate deadlines for applicants who wish to request assistantships since we offer financial support to all who are admitted to the program. Admission decisions are usually made by early March, and students generally must accept or decline offers by April 15. The department requires applicants to use the on-line application to the Graduate School and to Computer Science & Engineering. Please go to: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/grad/application_materials.html. A complete application consists of these six (or seven) items:
