Cost of Study

The Autumn 2007-Spring 2008 tuition and fees for full-time students who do not have assistantships is $3,139 per quarter for residents and $7,155 per quarter for nonresidents. These rates are subject to change, and you can view up-to-date tuition information at http://www.washington.edu/students/sfs/sao/tuition/rates.html.

Students with assistantships are granted a tuition waiver (at the resident fee level, regardless of residency status), and these students pay only minimal non-waivable fees (approximately $225 per quarter). The tuition, which is waived for the student, is paid by the research grant or department budget that pays the student's monthly salary.

Assistantships

A number of Research Assistantships are available through faculty members' research grants. Teaching Assistantships for undergraduate courses and some graduate courses are also available. Students who are funded as Research or Teaching Assistants receive a monthly stipend and the bulk of the tuition fees are waived.

Virtually all of the graduate students are supported by research or teaching assistantships. In recent years, we have been able to offer financial aid to all of our incoming graduate students.

Prospective graduate students are also encouraged to apply for support from outside the University, such as National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships and Graduate Minority Fellowships. For information, contact your institution or the Fellowship Office, National Research Council, 2101 Constitution Ave., Washington, D.C., 20418.

Note To Foreign Students: All international students regardless of prior degree must present a score of at least 55 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or 28 on the Speaking section of the TOEFLibt in order to accept the (required) minimum of two quarters of teaching assistantship duties. The TSE is offered worldwide, and it should be taken in advance of arrival at the University of Washington, preferably well in advance of an application so that the results are available to the Admissions Committee. Please note that applicants with Permanent Resident status must also take the TSE to qualify for teaching duties. Only those who have become U.S. citizens are exempt.

Student Health Insurance

Students who have funding, which is processed through the University (Teaching Assistantship, Research Assistantship, or Fellowship), automatically receive Graduate Appointee Insurance Plan coverage which is paid for the student by the University. In addition, the University provides 50% of the incremental cost of coverage of spouse and/or children, if the student so desires.

Housing

The University maintains some housing for both unmarried and married graduate students. The demand for on-campus housing usually exceeds the supply, and students seeking housing information should contact the office of Housing and Food Services early. You can write, call, or e-mail to University of Washington, Housing and Food Services Office, 301 Schmitz Hall, Box 355842, 1400 Northeast Campus Parkway, Seattle, Washington 98195, 206-543-4059, hsfinfo@u.washington.edu. More information can be found at the Housing and Food services web site at http://hfs.washington.edu/.

Many graduate students live off campus, and numerous apartments, private rooms, and shared houses can be found, both in the University District and elsewhere in the city. (Housing near the campus tends to be more difficult to find.) A variety of modes of transportation are available: by foot, by bicycle (including the Burke-Gilman Bicycle Trail), by an excellent bus system, and by car. Arrangements for housing off-campus should be made individually; listings of available housing may be found on bulletin boards at the Student Union Building, in the student newspaper The Daily at http://www.thedaily.washington.edu/, and The Seattle Times classified ads at http://www.seatimes.com/classified/. Craig's List Seattle has also proved to be a valuable resource for locating housing.
