CSE Annual TA Appointment Policy
- Annual appointments for the academic year (not including summer) will
be made during spring quarter of the previous academic year. Students who
desire an annual appointment must apply during the application period
which begins around the 7th week of spring quarter.
- Students in the first three years in the program will be automatically
appointed for the year assuming that they apply for an annual position
during the spring application period and that they are making satisfactory
progress toward the degree. (See University criteria from
Executive Order 28 for performance of TA duties and the availability
of positions.)
- Students beyond the third year who wish to have an annual TA position
should also apply in the spring during the application period. These
applicants will be ranked according to (i) academic progress, (ii) prior
TA performance, and (iii) need to satisfy the two-quarter teaching
requirement for the Ph.D. The ranking will be done by a small faculty
committee. We will attempt to make as many annual appointments as
possible. Instructor and student preferences will be taken into
consideration when quarterly course assignments are made.
- Students may request to suspend or remove themselves from an annual
appointment at least four weeks before a quareter begins and before
quarterly course assignments are announced by notifying the graduate
program advisor. It would be very exceptional if a timely request for a
suspension or removal could not be granted.
- During the academic year a student may request a quarterly TA position
approximately six weeks before the beginning of the requested quarter when
the TA sign-up is announced. Instructor and student preferences will be
taken into consideration when quarterly appointments and course
assignments are made.
- We encourage students with RA appointments to apply for a 50-50 TA/RA
position, where appropriate.
We will continue to use the on-line TA signup each quarter to express
preferences and credentials.
