MASTER'S DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
ALL OPTIONS
- Residency of 3 full-time quarters (9 credits/qtr). Part-time
students, see the General Catalog.
- A total of 40 CREDITS, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- 18 GRADED CREDITS are required in approved 400- and any 500-level
courses, each with grades of at least 2.7.
M.S.-THESIS OPTION
- 9 credits CSci 700, Master's Thesis
- Of the 31 remaining credits,
- At least 16 credits must be in courses numbered 500 or above
- 24 credits must be Computer Science courses
- 7 credits may be in one or more supporting fields such as:
Engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, business administration,
linguistics, philosophy, psychology, or medicine.
- THESIS: Preparation of a written report acceptable to a Supervisory
Committee and satisfactorily passing an oral examination of the
thesis work. Approximately TWO WEEKS before the oral presentation
of the thesis: 1) determine a mutually agreeable time for the presentation
with your faculty advisor and at least one other faculty person who agrees
to read the thesis, 2) reserve
a conference room on the Web, 3) notify the Graduate Program Advisor
of the
date/time/title so the announcement can be made.
NON-THESIS OPTION:
- Of the 40 credits required:
- 20 credits must be in courses numbered 500 or above.
- 30 credits must be in CSE courses.
- 10 may be in one or more supporting fields.
- Satisfactorily passing the M.S. Qualifying Evaluation
as described in the document Ph.D. and M.S. Qualifying
Requirement.
Approximately TWO WEEKS before the
oral presentation of the project: 1) determine a mutually agreeable time
for the presentation with the two faculty advisors, 2) reserve
a conference room on the Web, 3) notify the Grad Advisor of the
date/time/title/advisors so the announcement can be made.
PROCEDURE TO OBTAIN YOUR MASTER'S DEGREE
- You must submit a Master's Degree
request
to the Graduate School during the first seven weeks of the quarter in
which the degree is to be completed.
The application, informally called a Master's degree warrant, is
reviewed (for credits, residency, and GPA requirements) by the
Graduate School.
- During the quarter when your requirements will be completed:
- The Graduate Program Advisor will notify students that
warrants are ready for faculty signatures, usually the two quals advisors.
After the warrant has been signed, return it to the Graduate Program
Advisor, who will make a copy of your signed warrant for the department files.
For students doing the thesis option, the student must submit the
required copies to the Graduate School by the quarterly deadline.
- Thesis-option students should give an electronic copy of the thesis
to the Graduate Advisor for the department files. The student should
check with the advisor to see if s/he also wishe to have a copy.
DEADLINE TO RETURN WARRANT
To graduate in the current quarter the approved warrant (and copies of the
thesis when appropriate) must be submitted to the Graduate School BY THE
LAST DAY OF THE QUARTER.
Check UW General Catalog and departmental documents to confirm and supplement
these requirements. It is the student's responsibility to meet all degree
requirements.
