Successful applicants to the program will have a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering or a closely related field as well as significant professional experience in advanced computing technology. We expect incoming students to have taken at least the following courses at the undergraduate level: data structures, algorithms, computer systems, and programming languages. Additionally, competitive applicants have substantial programming experience.

Experience for PMP students ranges from two to over 20 years in the field, with the average around four years. Generally applicants need at least two years professional experience to be considered for admission. The average undergraduate GPA of accepted applicants is 3.5, with a range of 3.0 to 4.0.

The University requires the GRE for admission. The only exception to this requirement is for candidates who have a Ph.D. from a U.S. institution. Average GRE scores for accepted applicants are (in order of importance):

Quantitative: 88%
Analytical: 83% (old test), 4.5 (new written test)
Verbal: 70%

There is no minimum GRE score. Applicants with GRE scores more than 10% below the average scores (especially those with just lower verbal scores) will still be considered for acceptance.

International applicants

The graduate school requires international applicants, immigrants to the United States, and permanent residents of the United States, whose native language is not English and who have not received a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited U.S. institution, to submit a valid TOEFL score. Only official TOEFL score reports less than two years old will be accepted. Citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom are exempt from the TOEFL requirement, as are applicants with bachelor's or master's degrees from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom.

For additional information or to make arrangements to take the TOEFL, contact the Educational Testing Service at www.toefl.org.

The Michigan Language Test may be taken instead of the TOEFL. Information on the Michigan Language Test can be found here.

A minimum score of 580 (TOEFL) or 237 (TOEFLC), or 90 on the MLT, is required for exemption from an English as a Second Language (ESL) requirement.
