JOB TITLE: Graduate Teaching Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Computer Science and Engineering

QUARTER: Summer 2008 (June 13 - August 22)

CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION:

Graduate Teaching Assistants lead quiz, discussion, or laboratory sections, serve as a class assistants, or provide supervised teaching.

Each appointment is classified as an Academic Student Employee (ASE) and is governed by a contract between the University of Washington and GSEAC/UAW, which is found at the following website: http://www.washington.edu/admin/hr/laborrel/contracts/uaw/addons/index.html


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Graduate TA duties and responsibilities may include the following (specific duties and responsibilities will be provided by course instructor):

· Attend lectures
· Conduct quiz section meetings
· Facilitate discussions
· Prepare lectures for quiz sections
· Prepare review materials for quiz sections
· Hold extra review sessions for exams
· Obtain room for review sessions
· Request or acquire necessary equipment
· Hold regular office hours
· Tutor students
· Manage and respond to course-related e-mail
· Prepare webpage for course materials
· Maintain (update) webpage for course materials
· Develop and maintain electronic bulletin boards, discussion sites, etc.
· Prepare assignments · Grade assignments · Prepare test questions
· Proctor exams
· Score exams
· Maintain grading records
· Prepare course attendance records
· Maintain course attendance records
· Calculate quarter grades
· Request student assessments for course
· Coordinate with OEA for course evaluations
· Attend instructor/TA meetings
· Act as liaison/mediator between student and professor
· Prepare lecture materials
· Present lectures
· Prepare overheads
· Prepare handout materials
· Review literature
· Place course materials on library reserve


PERCENTAGE OF APPOINTMENT: Full time (50%) or half-time (25%)

HOURS: Graduate TAs with a full appointment will not be required to work for more than 220 hours per quarter for an average of 20 hours a week, and shall not exceed 30 hours in a given week except by the TA’s consent. Graduate TAs with less than a full appointment will have their hours appropriately prorated.

SALARY (monthly--* pending final verification):
TA  -- $2,011 + 20% (pre-quals)
TA1 -- $2,102 + 20% (post-quals, pre-generals)
TA2 -- $2,181 + 20% (post-generals)

**TA stipends during the summer are be 20% higher than during other quarters of the Academic Year

Note: A new tentative labor agreement between the UW and the UAW (representing Academic Student Employees) is pending approval by the UW Board of Regents on May 17 and will likely cause the above salaries to be adjusted upward.

Appointment level based on academic progress. Above salaries are based on a full-time appointment. Half-time salaries are pro-rated.

1) Registration is for entering whether you wish to TA for the current quarter plus additional information to identify you and your general areas of interest.

2) Application is for updating data about your qualifications so that instructors can more easily find the best qualified TAs.

3) Edit/Establish Course Preferences is for entering your preferences of which courses you want to TA.  In order to enter course preferences, you must first register as described in step #1. Your preferences are ranked so that we can find the best match for your preferences and the instructors' preferences.

All students must apply each quarter they wish to be considered a TA.  Students who apply and are not appointed during a given quarter will remain eligible to fill any TA openings should they occur.
