JOB TITLE: Undergraduate Teaching Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Computer Science and Engineering

QUARTER: Autumn 2009

CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION:

Undergraduate Teaching Assistants provide administrative support for quiz, discussion, or laboratory sections and serve as class assistants. Undergraduate Teaching Assistants may not perform teaching duties that require full responsibility for a course.

Each appointment is classified as an Academic Student Employee (ASE) and is governed by a contract between the University of Washington and GSEAC/UAW, which is found at the following website: http://www.washington.edu/admin/hr/laborrel/contracts/uaw/addons/index.html

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Undergraduate TA duties and responsibilities may include the following (specific duties and responsibilities will be provided by course instructor):

HOURS: Variable, not to exceed 19.5 hours/week combined for ALL UW jobs. Undergraduate TAs generally work 10-15 hours per week.

WAGES: $10.50 –$14.00 per hour, depending on experience as undergraduate TA.

SIGN-UP PROCEDURE (please read carefully):

The TA sign-up procedure is a three step process:

1) REGISTRATION
2) APPLICATION
3) EDIT/ESTABLISH COURSE PREFERENCES

** Important: Be sure to complete all three of these steps! **

1) REGISTRATION is for entering whether you wish to TA for the current quarter plus additional information to identify you and your general areas of interest. (Important: Be sure to check the box that says "I wish to TA autumn, 2009")

2) APPLICATION is for updating data about your qualifications so that instructors can more easily find the best qualified TAs.

3) EDIT/ESTABLISH COURSE PREFERENCES is for entering your preferences of which courses you want to TA. Your preferences are ranked so that we can find the best match for your preferences and the instructors' preferences.

TAs are generally expected to attend the lecture of the course they wish to TA for. Please pay special attention to whether you have a schedule time conflict with any course and rank any course with '-1' if a conflict exists. Exceptions are sometimes made for students who have previously TA'd for that course or if other special circumstances exist. Contact me if this applies to you.

All students must apply each quarter they wish to be considered a TA. Students who apply and are not appointed during a given quarter will remain eligible to fill any TA openings should they occur.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN BEING A TA FOR CSE 142 AND 143:

TAs for CSE 142 and 143 will be selcted through a separate process from among students who have previously interviewed for positions.
