Preparing for Industry: System Operator jobs

The following is a general description of this type of position, and a list of courses recommended by some CSE's industry affiliates as preparation for this career path. You can also see recommended courses for all career paths to compare recommended courses for many career paths on one page.

    A system operator (sysop) runs a computer server. It can also refer to someone who manages a bullitain board, online service, or any other computer system. In general, a sysop runs the day-to-day operation of a server is available whenever the system is.

    A related term is system administrater -- in larger computer systems, the administrator manages security and user access while a system operator monitors and performs routine operations at the computer. In smaller computer systems (for example, UNIX systems), the administrator and the system operator tend to be the same person.
