Preparing for Industry: Tech Writing jobs

The following is a general description of this type of position, and a list of courses recommended by some CSE's industry affiliates as preparation for this career path. You can also see recommended courses for all career paths to compare recommended courses for many career paths on one page.

    Technical writers design, create, maintain, and update technical documentation. This includes online help, users' guides, white papers, design specifications, and other documents. Tech writers may also edit and format documents prodiced by engineers, scientists, and other professionals.

    Tech writers work with any technical subject requiring explanation to a particular audience. They are usually not experts in specific subject matter, and are generally not hired for their expertise in a particular subject, but for expertise in gathering information, analyzing the subject and the audience, and producing clear documentation.

    Before writing a document, a technical writer gathers as much information as needed, by studying exsisting material and interviewing subject matter experts. After gathering info, a good technical writers creates documentation that is accurate, complete, and as concise as possible. Technical writers communicate in many ways: printed documents, Web-based or electronic documents, training materials, and industrial film scripts.
