Graduation

Graduation is not automatic. Generally, you should file for graduation two or three quarters before you plan to graduate (for example, file during autumn quarter if you plan to graduate at the end of spring quarter). If you are pursuing a double major or double degree, you will need to make an appointment with your other department as well. If you have a minor, we will check your minor requirements at your CSE graduation appointment.

The last day to file your graduation application is the third Friday of the quarter you plan to graduate. You must see an advisor before then. (See additional information on Graduating Senior Priority deadlines below.)

To file for graduation, please follow these steps:

  1. Fill out our Graduation Appointment Request Form
  2. Update your Co-Op/Internship and Scholarship Information by using the MyCSE page which will allow us to update our records on where our students worked before graduating. This information is kept in an internal database within CSE.
  3. Complete the forms above and then come to dropin advising hours anytime after the first full week of the quarter in order to finalize your graduation paperwork. Please understand that we will be busy the first week or two with issues related to the beginning of the quarter.

Graduating Senior Priority

Students who plan to graduate winter or spring quarters and who wish to be eligible for Graduating Senior Priority (GSP), should schedule a graduation appointment with a CSE advisor and, if you are pursuing a second major, with that department's advisor, before regsitration begins for the following quarter.

You will have a maximum of two quarters of GSP If, after two quarters, you do not graduate and continue to take classes, you will be eligible for regular senior registration according to the schedule outlined in the Time Schedule.

Departmental Graduation Reception

Graduating CSE majors and their families and friends will be invited to a graduation ceremony and reception held the morning of the UW ceremonies, June 14th, 2008. The ceremony will be held in Meany Hall. The doors will open by 8:00AM, and we will be starting at 9AM. There will be a reception following the departmental ceremony (approximately 1030-12) in the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering Atrium (next to Reboot cafe). Invitations with complete information will be mailed to seniors sometime in May. Students wishing also to participate in the UW ceremony in Husky Stadium will have time to do both if they choose. The UW ceremony starts at 1PM. You must register for the UW Graduation Ceremony.

RSVP for the June 14th CSE Graduation Event The attire for the CSE event is either cap and gown, or business casual, your choice. There are no tickets for the CSE event, but there ARE required tickets for the UW Ceremony.

Exit Survey

Please make sure to fill out the exit survey during the last quarter you are attending courses at UW. The information you provide will help assure the improvement of the undergraduate program.

Degree Validation

The UW maintains a directory of degrees earned. Prospective employers and others who need verification that you've earned your degree may access this information online

Baccalaureate Honors

Baccalaureate Honors: Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude Cum Laude means "with praise," Magna Cum Laude means "with great praise," and Summa Cum Laude means "with highest praise."

Baccalaureate honors are awarded upon graduation to undergraduates earning their first bachelor's degree with at least 90 UW credits, of which at least 60 are numerically graded. Correspondence credits do not count as "UW credits."

These honors have nothing to do with whether the students are in either the deparmental or college honors program; unlike the invitation to join Phi Beta Kappa, they do not require any particular distribution of credits. In addition, students who have earned quarterly and/or annual Dean's List recognition do not necessarily qualify for baccalaureate honors.

All graduates earning baccalaureate honors are given a gold honor cord to wear in the Commencement ceremony. For students graduating in spring, the honors listed in the commencement program, as well as honor cord distribution, are based upon a student's cumulative GPA as of the winter quarter, since spring grades are not available for this determination. Spring classes are ultimately included in the credit totals and GPA calculations for honors posted to the student's final record.

The GPAs for baccalaureate honors are set each year for the following year (autumn through summer) by a subcommittee of the Faculty Council on Academic Standards, based on statistics for the current year provided by the Graduation and Academic Records Office. Since 1995-96, cutoffs have been different for each of the colleges of the University. Check out the UW Baccalaureate Honors page for details.

Phi Beta Kappa

PBK is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honors society whose purpose is to recognize and honor students with excellent academic records. Elections occur at the end of each quarter (or slightly before, in the case of spring quarter). Election requirements are: a 3.75 GPA, an upper division “liberal” course requirement of 8 credits (courses at the 300-level or above which are not closely related to the student’s major), and a University residency requirement. Students do not apply for PBK. Instead, the Registrar’s Office provides the UW chapter with the transcripts of all students who meet the credit and GPA requirements. The chapter then determines whether the distribution and upper division breadth requirements are met. If so, the chapter sends a letter of invitation to the student. For full and up-to-date information consult the chapter’s home page.

Please see the CSE Departmental Honors page.

Career Planning

Take a look at our CSE Career Planning page. You will find links to several online employment opportunities. Visit the UW Center for Career Services (134 Mary Gates Hall) to learn about upcoming workshops on conducting a job search, writing resumés and cover letters, and interviewing. Plan to attend an orientation which will provide an overview of career services, campus recruiting procedures, and registration to use the Center.

Alumni Information

Make sure to stay in touch with the department and with your fellow alumni through our alumni directory. You'll also find information about e-mail forwarding, the latest happenings around the department, upcoming events, and additional items of interest to graduates. You should also consider checking out the UW Alumni Association webpage for information about one free year of membership and how to set up your UW alumni email account (free)
