General Information

Admissions

Ideally, most students will apply to this program at the end of their junior year, shortly after completing all 300-level CSE requirements, and admitted students will plan their remaining CSE senior requrirements and master's requirements as a combined two-year plan.

In May 2008 we admitted 13 seniors who began Master's coursework in 2008-2009.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • UW CSE undergraduate major
  • Junior standing or higher
  • At least a 3.00 GPA (which must be maintained for satisfactory progress)
  • All 300-level CSE core courses complete

Application Details

Students may apply as early as their junior year, after completing all 300-level CSE requirements, and must begin the program within one year of graduation from their BS. Most students should be admitted before beginning their senior year. Students will apply through our application as well as to the UW Graduate School, but the GRE is not required

The application will require you to submit the following information:

  • Statement of Purpose: Your statement of purpose should be no more than one page. Here are some things you may consider addressing:
    • Why are you interested in pursuing a combined BS/MS?
    • What aspects interest you most? e.g. specific areas of study, overall breadth and depth (there is no wrong answer here.)
    • What makes you a good candidate?
  • References
    • We will ask you to list up to three (CSE) faculty or instructors from whom you took a class, with whom you did research, or for whom you were a TA. (List the one who could provide the best information first.)
    • You do not need to get their permission to write down their name, but you could drop them a line letting them know you have applied if you wish.
  • Transcripts: You will be asked to upload a copy of your UW unofficial transcript (the printer friendly pdf version from MyUW)
  • Resume:You will have the option to upload a current resume
  • MyCSE: You will want to make sure that everything in your MyCSE profiles is up to date, including scholarships, co-ops/internships and research.
  • Tentative Timeline for Autumn 2009 admissions:
    • Late spring 2009: Application goes live
    • End of spring quarter: Decisions made and sent via email
