ACM Student Chapter
The ACM, or Association for Computing Machinery, is an international society devoted to the advancement
of scientific and educational computing. We are the University of Washington student chapter, and our goal
is to bring the drive and spirit of this organization to undergraduates in the Computer Science & Engineering
department here at the University of Washington in Seattle. Furthermore, we strive to provide an atmosphere
that encourages academic growth, departmental socialization, and open lines of communication among students
and faculty.
ACM-W at the UW
The ACM-W, the Association for Computing Machinery for Women, is a student organization designed
to increase recruitment and retention of women in computing fields and increase the awareness of
women leaders in computing. This organization provides a framework for activities that help to educate
women about the opportunities in computing, engage women in exciting computing activities,
connect students with women leaders in the field, encourage students to promote the field of computing to young girls,
and promote the activities of ACM. Membership is open to all students — male and female — who support the goals of the organization.
Women in Computer Science and Engineering
WICSE seeks to provide an atmosphere of academic, social and community support for current and prospective womem in computer science or computer engineering. We strive to provide useful academic, professional and community resources that can take you through your academic career and into the workforce.
This is a place learn about opportunities, get connected to new experiences, and inspire involvement. Whether you are a current CSE student or just considering CSE, there's something here for you. Get connected and get involved!
International Exchange Programs
The department encourages both undergraduate and graduate students to participate in international exchange programs. These can add valuable new perspectives to your education, both academically and culturally. CSE itself has one exchange program set up, with KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. This is a strong department. There are also various other UW-wide exchange programs, and other CSE-specific programs may be set up in the future.
Volunteer with the Carlson Center
The Carlson Center at the University of Washington is committed to engaging undergraduates in understanding, building and improving our communities and as a result, defining citizenship. This goal is reached through the development and support of programs designed to incorporate academic coursework with community-based learning and leadership. We believe that opportunities for learning outside the classroom deepen a student's understanding of complex, philosophical, economic and political issues and develop a sense of civic responsibility at the University, greater Seattle and global levels.
Minority Science & Engineering Program (MSEP)
Open to all students, MSEP provides comprehensive support for over 400 African American, Hispanic and Native American undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering and science. This program is structured to promote excellence in academic standards and to facilitate leadership skills in community building activities. MSEP also provides a supportive home base for three important minority student societies: The American Indian Science and Engineering Society, the National Society of Black Engineers, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
Women in Science & Engineering
Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) is a university-level program housed within the Center for Workforce Development, designed to increase the recruitment and retention of women of all ethnic backgrounds in science and engineering (S&E) and to create an academic and social climate at the UW which is conducive to both men and women in S&E at the undergraduate and graduate levels. CWD offers programs at the state, national, and international levels designed to strengthen the workforce pipeline while adding diversity in the process. WiSE focuses on local and state outreach in Washington while other CWD programs and services include Workforce Management Services and the Global Alliance for Diversifying the Science & Engineering Workforce.
