This scholarship is available only to those students currently enrolled as a Computer Science or Computer Engineering major here at the University of Washington.
This scholarship was established by Kirk and Melissa Glerum in 2005.
Kirk Glerum joined Microsoft in 1987 as a developer on the Office team after graduating from the UW in 1983 with a double major in computer science and mathematics. Melissa received her bachelor's degree in computer science from Brown University and was an eight year Microsoft developer on Word and Excel. Their educations prepared them for highly successful careers and they hope to make the same opportunity available to future generations of students.
The Glerums created this endowed scholarship fund so that CSE can recruit the brightest Washington State students directly from high school. At the time of their gift, Kirk stated enthusiastically, "We want every smart kid to give computer science a try and see how cool it really can be." They want those 'tries' to start just as soon as a freshman sets foot on the UW campus. The Glerum Family Endowed Scholarship in Computer Science & Engineering allows CSE to compete with other universities that are offering full-ride scholarships to these stellar undergraduate students.
This scholarship will be awarded to incoming freshmen with demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. The award amount varies depending on the individual need of the recipients.
