Motivation

Data-intensive scalable computing (DISC) is becoming an increasingly relevant area of computer science education. Given the rapid rate of change in this field, existing curricular efforts need to be revisited to address the unique challenges for designing computer clusters, software platforms for large-scale data computing, and applications that effectively use them.

The goal of this workshop is to inspire the development of new coursework in large-scale data-intensive application design and cluster computing. Educators will be introduced to existing curriculum components for similar coursework, as well as provide in-depth hands-on experience using software platforms that make this manageable in an undergraduate setting. Time will be allocated for discussions between attendees and representatives from industry and the open-source community to help formulate new ideas to carry back to the academic institutions of the attendees.

New platforms such as Apache Hadoop enable individuals to experiment with large scale data processing application design. This open-source system provides a clean abstraction for developing powerful web scale applications appropriate for introduction at the undergraduate level.

NOTE: Travel, lodging, and meal expenses for accepted participants is provided through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Schedule:

The workshop will be held for two and a half days on July 16–18, 2008 and follows this schedule.

Location:

The workshop will be held at The University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Seattle is lovely in the summer! We'd love to have you visit.

Getting there:

Seattle is easily reached by plane to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (a.k.a. SEA-TAC; airport code is "SEA"). From there, it is about a 30 minute drive to the city. Rental cars are available at the airport, and very convenient shared-ride van service is available through Shuttle Express.

To drive to campus: From the airport and all points south, take the I-5 North. Get off at Exit 168B (Bellevue/Kirkland) to State Rt. 520. Take the first exit off SR520; the sign is for Montlake Blvd. NE. Turn left into Montlake Blvd, and continue north past the Husky Stadium. Move into the far left lane to prepare for the fork in the road. When the road splits, take the left fork onto 25th Ave NE. Proceed to the traffic light and turn left onto Pend Orelle Road. Head up the hill to Gate #3. Stop at the gate for a parking permit; they will give you directions to the Paul Allen Center for Computer Science and Engieering.

From all points north, take I-5 southbound to exit 168B; the same directions as north apply.

From all points east, take I-90 West until the junction with I-5; take I-5 north and proceed to exit 168B and follow the directions above.

It is far simpler to use Shuttle Express; they will know the route. (You must, however, specify the Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering; there is another Allen Center for Digital Arts located elsewhere!)

The Campus:

The University of Washington campus is centrally located in Seattle, just north and east of the downtown area in the University District. The CS department is housed in the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering, a modern building finished just five years ago.

Lodging

Lodging will be provided for attendees in the University of Washington dormitories via funding for this event.

For those wishing to stay in a hotel, there is a list of local hotels maintained by the University District Chamber of Commerce.
