Me at Niagara Falls

Greetings, Web surfer! You've reached Alan L. Liu's home page. Use the left side-bar to navigate this site.

I am a University of Washington graduate student in the Computer Science & Engineering department and a member of dub, the UW Human-Computer Interaction and Design community. I have a M.S. in CSE from UW and a B.S. in EECS from UC Berkeley, where I was a member of the Group for User Interface Research. Research-wise, I am interested in the design, prototyping, and evaluation of context-aware, ubiquitous computing systems.

I was born in Changsha, the capital of Hunan, China. At the age of four, my family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where I spent most of my life, followed by two years in the 'burbs. In 1999, my family moved to the land of overpriced housing -- Silicon Valley (Mountain View, CA to be precise). Then in 2004, they moved to the Dulles, Virginia area. It's no wonder that I put h* in my geek code: "I'm not sure where I live anymore. This lab/workplace seems like home to me."

My non-academic interests include anime and manga, the Chicago Cubs, rock and roll, webcomics, and Free Software. If I had more free time, I would spend it playing guitar, running, reading, gaming, windsurfing, and regularly getting haircuts. Or maybe just sleeping a whole lot.
