I spent the 1993-1994 academic year as a visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Science , in Bangalore, India . I was there with my wife and our two yearold son. Here are a collection of letters that I sent to colleagues and friends describing some of our adventures and culture shock. We were in India from Aug 1993 through Aug 1994. These notes are mostly from the September - January, I fell behind in my writing and never got caught up.
We lived in Bangalore, a city of about 5 million people. I chose to go to Bangalore, both because of the Indian Institute of Science, and because Bangalore has a relatively decent climate all year round. Every day living was a challenge: there were many things that struck us as strange , with local transportation being a particular highlight. There were other hassles and going to the market was interesting. Health was a major concern, so we bought an expensive water filter . We travelled fairly extensively in South India, visiting Mysore , Madras , Kanchipuram , and Ooty. We also made a trip to North India, and over Christmas we visited Hong Kong .
