Carl Hartung

I'm a PhD student in computer science at the University of Washington where I'm advised by Gaetano Borriello. My current research primarily explores applying technology to help solve issues in developing regions. I focus on designing, building, and evaluating mobile/wireless systems for everything from environmental monitoring to personal activity recognition. I like gadgets-- so most of my research uses some combination of cell phones, embedded processors, sensors, and wireless networking. I am also a member of the Change group at UW.

Currently, I'm one of the lead developers on Open Data Kit (ODK), a suite of open source information service tools for Google's Android platform. Great articles about our work have appeared in University Week and UW Columns

I also have a Masters in CS from the University of Colorado, Boulder where I worked with Prof. Rick Han on sensor network research. Through a collaboration between CU and the University of Montana I spent a couple summers participating in forest fire research at the National Center for Landscape Fire Analysis in Missoula, MT.

I received my BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Washington. For more information you can check out my CV.
