This page contains descriptions of educational activities that I have performed over the years. All of these have surprised me in their successfulness and I hope that others can use these activities in their own classes.

K-12 Level

  • How a Computer Works: Full Description
    First Used For: 7th graders in an outreach program
    Summary:
    Discusses the inner workings of a computer through advertisements, a scrap model, and two activities designed to motivate Caching and Pipelining.

College Level

  • Data Structure Scenarios: Full Description
    First Used For: An undergraduate data structures course
    Summary:
    Discusses a collection of design exercises that give students experience in weighing the pros and cons when deciding on how to implement a problem with multiple correct solutions.

  • Effective Group Design through Learning Styles: Full Description
    First Used For: An undergraduate data structures course
    Summary:
    Discusses a pilot experiment in which students were assigned to in-class reading groups based on learning styles from the Felder-Silverman inventory.

  • The Latent Jigsaw Method: Full Description
    First Used For: An undergraduate data structures course
    Summary:
    Discusses a way for students to become peer teachers based upon pre-existing knowledge and opinions held by the students.
