Service Learning Resources On the Web

General

Best single site found so far: "The Home of Service Learning on the World-Wide Web" at the University of Colorado, http://csf.colorado.edu/sl/.  Bookmark this site and from it you can probably rediscover any site related to service learning.    Only a few of many links are mentioned here:

• Links to SL programs at 174 colleges and universities; of these, 47 have on-line course lists, and 16 have on-line syllabi (as of 7/10/99).  These college links are usually pretty high-level.  For example, the link to UW is to the Carlson Center. 
• Links to course listings and syllabi (168 of these as of 7/10/99), in order by discipline. 
• Links to bibliographies.
• Good page of SL organizations, networks, and resources. 
• A discussion list with searchable archive. 

Campus Compact. "Campus Compact is a membership organization which supports a burgeoning level of community service activity among students, faculty and administration on over 500 college and university campuses across the country."  Related links:

• Links to other state compacts (doesn't seem to be very complete).
• Washington Campus Contact (WACC) is a member of the Western Region Campus Compact Consortium, a four-state coalition of 92 college and university presidents and chancellors. WACC seems to be led by WWU. The second annual conference was held in CA in March, 1999.  Links include a listing of upcoming SL-related conferences.

American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Service Learning information.  Lots of good links and resources.

Most universities having something like UW's Carlson center.  Here are just a few that seem particularly rich in information or in links to other resources:

• National Service Learning Clearing House at the University of Minnesota.
• From the Volunteer Action center at Florida International University:  What is Service Learning?  The Big Dummies Guide to Service Learning.

• Citizen and Service Education (CASE) at Rutgers.  Includes lists of Rutgers CASE courses (none in Engineering or sciences).  The page seems to be outdated.

• Northern University (Aberdeen, SD) has a good page with SL definition, standards, etc.

UW pages.

• Carlson Center's Service Learning programs.  From there you can see a list of the official service learning courses each quarter.
• Geography:   Has a good definition of SL.

National Society for Experiential Education, which publishes one of the best single-volume books on the subject, Service-Learning in Higher Education: Concepts and Practices.

The American Association for Higher Education (AAHE) has a Service Learning Project with numerous publications.

Association for Experiential Education. 

Service learning is a part of the quasi-governmental Coporation for National Service, but seems to be only at the secondary school level.  Of 70 high schools recognized in 1998, one was in Washington: Granite Falls.

Meta-notes.

Began 7/10/1999.  Original use was for a one-day workshop on service learning, August 25, 1999.  An Alta Vista search on "service learning" gave 32000 hits, but the first few of them led quickly to an approximate fix-point.
