Phoebus: Progressive Display of Partial Query Results

with Ka-Ping Yee
for CS 262a (Fall 2002) with Professor Anthony Joseph & Professor Joseph Hellerstein
Visualization is an important area in databases because it helps human operators to understand the meaning behind the data. In order to investigate large datasets, users require feedback and control over their queries. However, as these queries can take significant amounts of time, it is important to be able to visualize the completed dataset based on partial data. We present a visualization system enhancement that provides insight into patterns in the final image by predicting in advance what the completed graphical image will look like. We use two different techniques, box shading and dot shading, to display our predictions for the final image. We evaluate our techniques using both quantitative and qualitative measures.
