I am an Assistant Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. I am also a core member of the DUB Group, our cross-campus initiative advancing Human-Computer Interaction and Design research and education.

My broad research interests are in Human-Computer Interaction, User Interface Software and Technology, and Ubiquitous Computing. My focus is on developing, deploying, and evaluating new approaches to the human obstacles surrounding widespread everyday adoption of ubiquitous sensing and intelligent computing technologies. I have recently examined these questions in the context of our CueFlik system supporting mixed-initiative end-user interactive concept learning in Web image search, the Kylin system and mixed-initiative information extraction, our GESTALT system addressing obstacles to software developer adoption of statistical machine learning techniques, and our development of practical and unobtrusive approaches to whole-home activity sensing.

I pursue this work together with an outstanding group of collaborators and am fortunate to advise amazing students:

I received my Ph.D. from the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where I worked with Scott E. Hudson. I earned my B.S. in Computer Science at Virginia Tech, where I worked with John Carroll and Mary Beth Rosson.
