Introduction to Deaf Studies

Assignments and Examinations:  Check due dates for these on the course schedule.

 

1.         Reading Assignments.

2.         Mid-Term Exam (30%)

3.         Final Exam (30%)   

4.         Report. (40%) You have three choices.  Type 5 pages report for any option. 

·        Book Report.  Choose one book from an approved book list.  Read and type a report including 3 pages summary and 2 pages reflection of your viewpoint, interpretation, and experience with the book. 

·        Report on Deaf Organization or Service Provider for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Deaf-Blind.  It has to be affiliated with Deaf culture and community.  Choose a topic from an approved list.  Review information provided by the provider on the web and in brochures.  Interview its representatives.  Type a report including 3 pages summary and 2 pages of your evaluation on their service or activity.

·        Deaf Culture Special Topic Project proposal:  This option is for any topic of special interest related to Deaf language, culture and community that is not on either list above.  For example, you may like to do a research topic such as “Why Cochlear Implant is controversial in the Deaf community?” Or “History of Eugenics in Deaf community”.  Type one page proposal on what you plan to do for your special interest topic.  You can begin as soon as your proposal is approved.  The project report must be 5 pages in length.
