Map

The following is a map of the sequencing of the steps in a generic pituitary procedure. A specific procedure will follow one trajectory through the map. The arrows representing the transitions between steps are conditional; certain trajectories can only be taken in certain cases, which are detailed in the explanation of that step.

The different color groups link together steps that are psychologically similar in the mind of the surgeon during the operation. These are mostly chronological similarities, and serve only to organize the map in a comprehensible manner. The groups aren't reflected in the specific descriptions of each step. In brief, their explanations are:

• Gray: Start/Done states, which have special definitions.
• Green: Steps pertaining to the breaking of the sinus bones to access the pituitary gland.
• Purple: Steps pertaining to the removal of parts of a macroadenoma that have extended through the sella turcica and into the space of the sinus.
• Red: Setps pertaining to the opening of the dura mater.
• Dark Blue: Steps pertaining to the removal of a macroadenoma.
• Light Blue: Steps pertaining to the removal of a micoradenoma.
• Yellow: Steps that are entered/exited during the part of the surgery during which the tumor is being removed.
• Pink: Final Hemostasis, which is a mandatory requirement for the completion all neurosurgeries.
• Orange: Steps required only in case of a CSF leak (but are optional even if no leak occurs).
