What Does Mel Do with Her Time?
Melody Kadenko is a Program Manager whose main project is PlanetLab.
PlanetLab
is a multi-disciplinary, multi-university, and multi-sponsored research program;
a global overlay network for developing and accessing new network services.
The goal is to grow to 1000 geographically distributed nodes, connected
by a diverse collection of links. Toward
this end, Intel is putting PlanetLab nodes into edge sites, co-location and
routing centers, and homes (i.e., at the end of DSL lines and cable modems).
PlanetLab is designed to support both short-term experiments and long-running
services. Currently running services include network weather maps,
network-embedded storage, peer-to-peer networks, and content distribution
networks. Another major project is in the area of Fault
Tolerance Networks. Her other research projects are
in the areas of Systems,
Networking,
and Architecture.
Responsibilities include obtaining research/development contracts, managing on-going
research projects, and not
arguing with her boss. Melody shares her office with Shannon
Gilmore and Ly Le.
Prior to moving to the Northwest in the Fall of 1992,
she lived in Illinois and was employed at the University of Illinois, Department of Civil Engineering,
while going to school. Her position at the Civil Engineering
Department was Student Societies Coordinator for five student societies.
She finished her degree at the University of
Washington in the area of International
Development, specializing in Soviet/post-Soviet studies.
During her off-time, she teaches English to Ukrainian families ("Kadenko" is Ukrainian, tak?), plays lots of
euchre (because everyone from the Midwest is expected to do this), drinks lots of espresso, does the hiking
/ camping / kayaking-in-the-Northwest thing
(although shopping
is fun too), and dances the night away. She also
teaches at the Refugee Women's
Alliance. She makes frequent trips
to
Illinois to visit friends and
family.
She also racks up many frequent flier miles through travels around the
world.
