The Turing Center
is a multidisciplinary research center at the University of Washington,
investigating problems at the crossroads of natural language processing, machine learning,
Web search, and the Semantic Web.
Established in May 2005 with a multi-million dollar gift from the
Utilika Foundation,
the Turing Center's mission is to advance the philosophy, science, and technology of pan-lingual
communication and collaboration among human and artificial agents.
As Assistant Director my primary responsibilities include operations management, fiscal
administration, human resources, events planning (including the Turing Center Distinguished Lecture Series),
and Web development.
University of Washington
The University of Washington is the number one
nationally ranked public research university --
for more than twenty five years the UW has led the nation's
public universities in competing for federal research
and training grants.
The University of Washington received more than
$1 billion in research funding
for fiscal year 2007, marking the first time it has reached this level.
The University of Washington is a
world leader and a premier research university with considerable
economic impact; additional information
is available at the Office of Research's
fact sheet.
Department of Computer Science & Engineering
The University of Washington Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a top ten
nationally ranked computer science department -- for a number of years UW CSE has
ranked among the top ten programs in the nation, along with Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, MIT,
Stanford, Illinois, Cornell, Texas, Princeton, Caltech and Wisconsin.
Additional information is available from the 2008 edition of
US News "America's Best Colleges"

UW CSE research
is active in most areas of computer science and computer engineering.
In addition to my role with The Turing Center, I am also a Grant and Contract Manager and Administrator
for the research groups led by
Prof. Oren Etzioni and
Prof. Pedro Domingos.
Principally our research is in the area of
Artificial Intelligence,
though we also work closely with the
Data Management and Intelligent Information Systems
group.
My primary responsibility is the cradle to grave management of research projects from government, industry,
and foundations. I handle all aspects of grant, contract, and gift management from pre-award administration
to post-award operations to final closeout and reporting. I serve as an interface between faculty investigators,
research sponsors, and the University for award negotiations, policies and procedures, compliance, and
intellectual property issues. My role has grown increasingly complex since moving into the
Paul G. Allen Center in 2003. In order to fully
maximize our new building space we've shifted our research approach to target large-scale awards that allow
us to add research staff, speciality computing labs, and equipment.
Federal research sponsors include the
National Science Foundation,
Office of Naval Research,
Army Research Office, and
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
Additional support from foundations and corporations include the
Utilika Foundation,
Washington Research Foundation,
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation,
Google,
Microsoft,
Intel,
IBM,
Kodak,
Ford, and others.
