ACM Programming Contest, 11/1/08

Problem P is a practice problem. It will not be included in the overall scoring. We will allow you to begin work at noon. This will give you a chance to try out the programming environment and the submission procedure. We won't have time to grade these before the contest begins, but we will grade them as quickly as we can and will give you feedback. Don't worry if your solution fails because this is not part of the actual contest. But pay attention to any note we write on the failure notice because you might be making an obvious mistake that you are likely to repeat with other problems (e.g., not reading from the correct file).

You are not to use the practice problem session to type in boilerplate code. You are just to type in a solution to Problem P.

Teams can use their practice time to try to instal eclipse cdt. No guarantees as to whether it will work.

Below are the contest rules:

• You can code in C++ or Java 1.6 using eclipse or the standard unix editors (vi/vim, emacs).

• You may not browse the web during the contest. You are allowed to access the Java api specification, the standard template library documentation, iostream documentation and the contents of this web page, but nothing else.

• You are allowed to use only one computer shared by all three team members. You may not log on to any other computer in the lab and you are not allowed to use your own personal laptops.

• You can have any books or printouts you want, but you are not allowed to electronically access any of your files or anyone else's files except those that you create during the contest itself. You are being given a team account that has no files on it. You are not to access any of the files on your own directory.

• For each problem you are to submit a single file with your solution. It's name should be a lowercase letter indicating which problem it is (a through h) and its extension should indicate the language (e.g., a.cpp or a.java). You are allowed to use different languages for different problems.

• When you are ready to submit a problem for grading, fill out a submission form with your team number, problem number, uw netid (the one you are using for catalyst submissions), and the last name of the person with that uwnetid. Leave the rest of the form blank. After filling it out, put it in the in box in your room. A staff member will come by regularly to pick these up and your form will be returned to you once it has been judged and recorded.

• In terms of scoring, the team that solves the most problems wins. Ties are broken by total time (less time wins). A 20 minute penalty will be assessed for each submission judged as incorrect if the problem is eventually solved (there is no penalty for incorrect submissions if you don't end up solving that particular problem).

• Results of scoring and answers to questions will be handed to your team directly on paper.

During the contest, if you have questions or need clarifications, write your question on a piece of paper with your team number and put it in the in box in your room.
