William Chan, University of Washington Ph.D. 1999, died tragically in an automobile accident on November 26, 1999. He had defended his dissertation, Symbolic Model Checking for Large Software Specifications, precisely one week earlier. His Ph.D. dissertation received honorable an honorable mention for the 2001 ACM Disseration Award. He was to join the faculty at Brown University in January 2000. William was born in December 1972 in Hong Kong. He went to Queen's College there for secondary school, and in 1991 moved to the United States for his undergraduate education. In 1994, he received his Bachelor of Science with Distinction from the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He then joined the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, obtaining his Master of Science degree in 1996. In William's memory, the Department of Computer Science & Engineering is starting a memorial endowment that will annually fund awards to the best Ph.D. dissertations in the department. Checks should be made payable to the University of Washington and sent to William Chan Memorial Fund A memorial service for William was held on Friday December 3, 1999, at the Aljoya Conference Center of Seattle.
