About me

I come from Shanghai, the most vibrant and cosmoplitan city on the eastern coast of China on the Pacific rim. Literally, the city name means "embarking on the sea". It is where the Yangtze River enters the sea.

Shanghai is a world in its own right, and it was my starting point to explore the larger world beyond it. I went to the UK in 1998 to study A-levels in Croydon, a small borough in the south of Greater London. The fact that it is the opposite of Shanghai in almost every possible way makes up for its otherwise plainness. From Croydon I moved to Cambridge, which was my base for many years.

The University needs no introduction from me, nor does the Computer Lab or Trinity College. I received my degrees there in Computer Science.

Cambridge is a beautiful place, but rather small too, so I ventured out every now and then. I interned at IBM Hursley (where I learnt the importance of a pub to the locals) and Citrix (where I saw Cambourne Business Park mostly as a construction site absolutely in the middle of nowhere and served by ridiculous bus services) in Summer 2001, IBM Zurich Research Lab (where I worked hard and hiked hard) in Summer 2002, EML Research (where I often felt like a fool for not knowing either computational biochemistry or German) in Summer 2003, MIT CSAIL (where I fully appreciated the meaning of 'extreme') in 2005, and Microsoft Research Cambridge (after finally realising my testbed cannot live out of a suitcase like I do) in 2006. Pains as well as gains, and fun alongside work, they make a great complement to the university life.

Now I live in Seattle, and the story continues....
