CSE Students

CSE graduate and undergraduate students have accounts on the "general purpose" instructional facilities: on the Instructional Unix Servers, and in the general purpose Instructional Labs (Sieg 230 & 329) under the Instructional Windows Domain ("CSEPCLAB"). These accounts are established when a student enters the department and removed one quarter after they leave the department.

For Non-majors

Non-majors or graduate students from other departments are given accounts to use appropriate facilities only for the quarter that they are enrolled in a CSE course that uses those facilities. (NB:. These "quarterly" accounts are removed at the end of each quarter. So anything that needs to be retained beyond that time should be moved out of your directory before the end of the quarter.)

Print out an account application form, or pick up a copy at the CSE Main Office (Sieg 114). Fill out the form and return it to the front desk in 114 (or to the instructor or TA). If you are registered for a CSE course, access to the appropriate labs will be granted and an account will be established by the end of the day after the application is turned in to the front office (probably sooner). Access and accounts are valid only for the quarter you are enrolled in one of these courses. Initial passwords will be provided to the instructor for distribution in class.

Card Key access (Husky Card) to the instructional computing labs in Sieg is based on class enrollment records. If you are not registered by the first day deadline, your access will be activated automatcially once the tenth-day registrations lists are available. Or if you need access sooner, look here.

Special Purpose Labs

The special purpose labs include:
  Graphics Lab   Special Projects Lab
Hardware Design Lab Digital Animation Lab (OUGL 326)
Accounts in special purpose laboratories are established only for the quarter that a student is enrolled in a course using those labs (or by special arrangement with an appropriate faculty sponsor). This applies to all CSE students as well as non-majors. (NB: These "quarterly" accounts are removed at the end of each quarter, to make resources available for the next quarter. So any student files that need to be retained beyond the quarter must be moved out of the student's directory before the end of the quarter.)

Card Key access (Husky Card) to the special purpose labs in Sieg is based on class enrollment records. If you are not registered by the first day deadline, your card key access will be activated automatcially once the tenth-day registrations lists are available. Or if you need access sooner, see here.

Keys to the Digital Animation Lab will be distributed in class.

Research Facilities in Sieg

CSE research facilities (e.g., Research Suns) are occasionally used for teaching a course, if they offer particular resources needed by the course, not available in the standard instructional facilities.

Accounts will be automatically be provided based on first day and tenth-day enrollment lists. If you register late for the quarter (and thus are not on the first day list), but require access before the tenth-day list is available (usually early in the third week of the quarter), you can print out an account application form, or pick up a copy at the CSE Main Office (Sieg 114). Fill out the form and return it to the front desk in 114 (or to the instructor or TA). You will also need to provide proof that you are registered in the course. An account on the appropriate research machines will be established by the end of the day after the application is turned in to the front office (probably sooner). Accounts are valid only for the quarter you are enrolled in one of these courses. Your initial password will be provided to the instructor for distribution in class. If special access to a research lab is necessary, see your instructor or TA.

Computing Labs Outside CSE

Math Sciences Computing Center (basement of Thomson Hall)
Introductory Programming Lab (Mary Gates Hall)

Instructions and forms will be provided by the instructor.

Undergrad TAs

Undergraduate TAs and non-major TAs are provided with access to special facilities to enable them to perform certain official duties, such as editing course web files, printing color transparencies, and preparing and grading assignments. Access to these facilities is provided during the quarter that you are a TA for a CSE course.

A computer account on a special host "vole.cs" is automatically created for you. This linux host provides "write" access to the course web area, which allows you to maintain the course web for the course you are assisting. Vole can be reached via remote login, remote X access, or you can sit in front of the machine (located in Sieg 127).

There is also an Undergrad TA Lab in Sieg 127, which is for undergraduate TAs to work on TA-related projects (such as grading, assignment preparation, transparency preparation, etc.) To get a key to this area, pick up a Key Authorization form in Sieg 128, have the instructor of the course you are TAing sign it, and return it to 128 to get a key.

Card Key Access

Card key access to the labs in Sieg mirrors the computer access. That is, all CSE students have access to general purpose labs for the full time they are in the department. Non-majors have access to general purpose labs when they are actively enrolled in a CSE course using those labs. Access to special purpose labs in Sieg (Graphics Lab, Special Projects Lab, Hardware Design Lab) is limited to students who are enrolled in a course using those labs.

Card Key access to CSE instructional labs for non-majors, and access to special labs for all students is initially based on the first-day registration records. Access to the labs is updated once tenth-day registrations records are available (i.e., early in the third week of the quarter). If you registered late for a class and you need access before the third week of the quarter, go to the front office, and pick up and complete a Card Key Access form. You must have it signed by your instructor, TA, or a CSE advisor, or provide proof of registration in the class. Take the completed form to Sieg 229, and see Kathleen Goforth. Or you leave these materials at the CSE front office in 114, and access will generally be provided by the end of the day after you turn in the forms and any documentation.

Policies, Passwords, Getting Started, Etc.

Your first act should be to understand that there are rules for appropriate use of CSE and UW computing facilities. Improper use of CSE and other UW computers and networks can get you into trouble. It is your responsibility to know the rules. C&C has produced an excellent description of the rules, laws and ethics surrounding use of computing services on campus. Find it here. Their information is naturally slanted toward use of C&C central facilities, but federal and state laws, and state and UW policies described in those pages apply to all CSE departmental computing facilities as well.

Your second act: change your password(s) !

Consult the Computing Resources for Undergrads for basic information on using the CSE Instructional Labs, the operating systems, using mail, reading news, printing, etc.

For problems using the labs or the software, consult the Support page.
