1. Computer Configuration
- The 39 work station PCs are all configured identically at the start of each new quarter using a computer 'image'. This baseline image is typically created by configuring a single PC with the software applications needed by courses using the Lab that quarter. Some applications may also be installed as 'packages' that can be ported to the PCs. This process is worked in cooperation with CSE Support who maintain the PCs operating system (currently Microsoft Windows 2000 Server) and other applications such as Microsoft Office and Network Associates VirusScan that are commonly used throughout CSE whereas applications specific to hardware-intensive courses are the responsibility of the Lab Manager.
- The configuration of individual PCs may alter during a quarter as software is installed to support specific project needs, however if a PC becomes corrupted the baseline image enables the machine to be quickly re-built without having to re-install everything separately.
- Every effort is made to ensure that the baseline image is as complete as possible (this requires advance thought and planning regarding software needed during the coming quarter) since if an application is missed then this will have to be individually installed when a machine is re-built until a new image is created that incorporates the 'missing' software. A new image is not usually created during the quarter unless there are substantial changes needed to all the PC's configurations.
- CSE computer accounts do not by default allow 'administrative' access to computer operations. In the event that administrative control of any of the Lab's PCs is needed (e.g. to install specialized project software), the "327user" account is provided - the password for this account is available on request from the Lab Manager.
- All computers in the lab automatically reimage on logout. Anything that needs to be saved between sessions should go on the Z drive.
- There is currently no Linux machine located in CSE 003. Linux machines are available elsewhere in CSE for W. T. Baxter Computer Engineering Laboratory use and support for certain hardware running on Linux is provided by a BootP Server maintained by CSE Infrastructure. In particular, if you need access to a Linux machine, contact the Lab Manager about getting cardkey access for 003E.
2. Procurement
- The Lab Manager is generally responsible for procuring hardware, software and other parts needed in the W. T. Baxter Computer Engineering Laboratory. All requests for equipment should be routed for prior approval through the Manager who will check budget availability and can apply the appropriate procedure such as requesting a donation or making a purchase by any of several methods (using a Procurement Card being the most common).
- In exceptional circumstances, such as when small items are needed urgently and the Lab Manager cannot be contacted, students may make purchases of up to $200 and request reimbursement later with petty cash (forms are available from the CSE Business Office). However, this should not be considered routine procedure as these purchases are not approved in advance and it makes it more difficult to control expenses. The Manager should be informed whenever such a petty cash purchase has been made.
- Please give as much advance notice as possible of anticipated needs; lack of time may result in the needed equipment not being available or incurring unnecessarily excessive shipping charges.
3. Maintenance
- The building janitor usually tends CSE 003 between (5-6) pm weekdays to empty the trash and clean up any 'big' mess (however, Lab users should aim to prevent any big mess and clean it up themselves if one occurs). On special request and always before the start of each new quarter, the janitor conducts a more thorough cleaning of the Lab (floor, windows and work benches). There are spare trash bags available by the cans which should be used when the cans fill up such as at busy periods at weekends. Empty cardboard boxes should be flattened and placed behind the trash cans or - if there are more than a few - taken to the recycling containers at the east end of Guggenheim Hall.
- The temperature in CSE 003 is controlled by air conditioning and heating systems. If the temperature becomes uncomfortable, do not alter the controls yourself - contact the Lab Manager who will make any necessary adjustments.
- If you find any problem with the physical infrastructure of the Lab that needs attention, please contact the Lab Manager, or - if the Manager is not available -Allen Center Maintenance.
4. Manager's Office
- The Lab Manager's office (CSE 003A in the corner of the Lab) is normally kept locked when neither faculty nor staff is using it to protect the security of equipment stored in there.
- If you must access this office when it is locked, contact the Lab Manager.
- If you see the Lab Manager's office door open in the evening or at the weekend and cannot find the Manager or anyone else using the office, please close / lock the door and inform the Lab Manager of the incident.
5. Further Information
- Contact the Lab Manager.
