1. Priority of Use
- Observe the scheduled Lab times as much as possible.
- In the event of a scheduling conflict between more than one course using the Lab in a given quarter, consult your TA for prioritization.
- If students are queuing to use the equipment, use the '2 hour rule': after using a system for 2 hours, give it up to another student for 2 hours. Avoid playing 'musical chairs'.
2. Computers
- Do not modify the setup of any PC (including such items as system parameters or application files); these are pre-configured for network use.
- Do not load additional software of any kind on to the PCs (including such things as utilities and games); only data files are acceptable.
- Do not copy application files from PCs; this is often illegal and, in most cases, the copied applications will not work.
- Save your work onto your Z drive; files left on any local hard drive are likely to be deleted.
- Do not use the PCs for personal activities.
3. Housekeeping
- Keep the Lab clean! If you make a mess, clean it up - don't leave it for the next person.
- Recycle any un-wanted paper or print-outs - don't leave them discarded in the Lab.
- Return items like data books, test equipment and tools, etc. to their storage locations in the Lab when you have finished using them - don't leave them lying on the bench.
- Do not bring un-needed items into the Lab.
- Do not leave personal belongings in the Lab overnight.
4. Problems
- If you find a computer, test equipment or other instrumentation with a problem, label it with the known symptoms, set it aside and report the fault. If a replacement is urgently needed, contact the Lab Manager.
- If you find a failed electronic component, mark it as such by bending its leads back on itself. Do not trash it or mix it with good parts - put it in the "Bad Parts" container in the Lab.
- If you need anything in the Lab that is not immediately available, submit a request.
- For other issues, consult the "Problems" Web Page or check with CSE Support.
