If this is the first time you are running Outlook Express, you will be prompted for a wizard. Since there is no way for me to predict if you are on a computer that is running OE for the first time, I will ask that you please cancel out of the wizard. You may also be prompted to import messages and address books from other accounts. Please cancel out of those dialogs too, this page does not cover those procedures.
1. Starting from the plain OE screen, select: Tools -> Accounts:
2. When the following screen appears, select the "MAIL" tab, and clicke the "ADD" button:
3. You will be prompted for your "Display Name". This will be the name that appears when people receive your message. Enter in your display name, and hit next...
4. You will be prompted for your "Email Address." This will be the address used when people reply to your messages. Enter in your email address, and hit next...
5. You will be prompted for email server type, and email server's name. The email server type is "IMAP" and the incoming mail server name is <username>.mail.cs.washington.edu . The outgoing mail server will be <username>.mail.cs.washington.edu. Enter these values and hit next...
6. Now enter your username(it will guess one for you, but ensure it is correct). You can also enter a password, if you so desire. If you are on a public machine, it is highly discouraged to save your password. Remeber to use the correct account name and password. For UNIX mail, use your UNIX/Kerberos password. For Exchange, use your windows password.
7. Congratulations! You are now at the "congratulations" page. Unfortunately, we aren't done, so click "Finish" on this screen:
8. You are now back to the accounts dialog box. Select the account we just added, and click the "Properties" button.
9. You should now be viewing the general properties for the account you just created. Click on the "IMAP" tab, and deselect "check for new messages in all folders." I also have to enter the word "mail" into the "root folder path." This is because all my IMAP folders are in a subdirectory of my home directory. If you are not sure if yours are, leave it blank. If configuring for Exchange, you will definitely leave this blank. Click "Apply."
10. Now click the "Advanced" tab. Check both boxes for "incoming" and "outgoing" mail servers, setting them for SSL. Also change the SMTP outgoing port to '587', click Apply.
11. Now click the "Servers" tab. Check the box at the *very* bottom of the page. Under "Outgoing mailserver," that says "my server requires authentication." . Close out all windows. Click "Apply."
13. Whew! We are done. Head to the Reboot Cafe for a free coffee drink-- tell 'em to put it on Tony's tab! I recommend a double grande choco-latte with whip, for truly this was a yoeman's task.
