If you have UNIX on your desktop, your first place for generic UNIX cycles is your desktop machine. If you have Windows on your desktop, your first place for generic UNIX cycles is one of the general (non-desktop) linux cycle servers. You are not prohibited from using someone else's desktop machine, but: If you use someone else's machine, be reasonable and polite: Don't try to palm off a job that's killing your comparable machine onto someone else -- you wouldn't like that and neither will they. Nice(1) your CPU bound jobs, don't be a memory/swap/disk hog, etc. You should check with the desktop user before using lots of resources. The desktop user has the right to ask you to compute elsewhere. However, the "owner" should also be reasonable and polite with regard to "external" usage. What goes around, comes around.
