VDI
- What is VDI: VDI stands for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and the concept is that there is a virutal machine in the cloud that you can connect to and use, just like you were sitting in front of it.
- Why use VDI: There are several reasons to use VDI. It may be more convenient for you to access a 'virtual' lab machine from your house than coming into the lab. The performance of the virtual machine may be better than physical machines available for you to use. You may not wish to install course related software on your personal computer. The software you require may not be compatible with your operating system (e.g. Mac OS / *nix).
- What types of VDI are available at CSE: To start, we are offering a set of machines that are configured identically to the undergraduate instructional lab Microsoft Windows machines. The current configuration allows for 15 virtual lab machines to be available to students. There is capacity to expand this number, if the resource is heavily utilized. Other types of VDI may be offered in the future, if this project proves successful.
- How do I connect to CSE VDI machines: There is a web page set up on the server that is hosting the virtual lab machines that monitors their status and gives a real-time list of availability. You can also find instructions on how to connect on this page, located here.
