This procedure will install the McAfee VirusScan package and configure it to be automatically updated every night with the latest anti-virus patches.
NOTE: Ensure that your account has administrative rights, or log on to your system as Administrator. You will need administrative rights to install VirusScan software on your system. McAfee VirusScan is licensed software. You may use it on State-owned equipment or on you own PC, but you may not sell it, give it away, or share it around with friends and family. The software can be found:
- from UW (UWNetID authentication required)
- on the UWICK CD-ROM ($5 at the UW Bookstores)
Installation procedure:
- Click on setup.exe to begin install. The Setup welcome panel will appear.
- Follow the setup wizard through selecting the defaults, when prompted for the type of licensing, select 'perpetual'.
- Select the 'typical' installation option.
- To finish off the installation, it is a good idea check the boxes for 'update now' and 'run scan' to ensure your system is up to date and clean.
- You will be asked to restart the computer to install the network driver, you need to do this before you can utilize the 'access protection' option, which is similiar to the 'windows firewall'.
After you have finished the installation, and rebooted, there are some post installation configuration options that I like to do. To start, right click on the shield icon near the clock and open the 'virus scan console'.
- Verify that the 'Auto update' is configured. Right click and select 'run' to test it.
- Right click the 'Unwanted Programs Policy and select properties. Check all the boxes in the list. This will remove spyware and adware along with viri. Apply your changes and exit.
- Right click the 'Scan All Fixed Disks' item. Click the 'schedule' button and check the box to enable the schedule tasks to run. On the schedule tab, choose a time that it can run that is good for you.
