Members of the CSE research community needing general UNIX cycles can use any of the research Linux cycle servers. These machines have the same software installed as found on the gws desktop Linux machines, but do not sit on anyone's personal desk. The software installation is based on a version of Fedora Core Linux, with local customizations and additions.
| Hosts | The current cycle server machines are
Host Model recycle Dell PowerEdge 2650 bicycle Dell PowerEdge 2650 tricycle Dell PowerEdge 2650 |
|---|---|
| Accounts | The gws Linux machines, and hence these cycle servers, share a password file which is centrally maintained and distributed. Accounts are given by default to all "research" grad students, but accounts may need to be requested for guests, staff, and faculty. If an account is needed request "linux" on the account application. Normal account application rules apply. |
| Password | The gws Linux machines use the CSE Kerberos database for password authentication. |
| Scratch Space | Like other gws Linux machines all the Linux cycle servers have a /scratch partition, available for general use. This space is NOT BACKED UP, nor is its use monitored or arbitrated. As the name implies, /scratch is not a place for important files. Various problems or system updates could result in the machine being wiped and re-installed with a new empty /scratch partition, so one would be wise not to leave anything important in this area. /scratch on the cycle servers gets cleared during an OS upgrade. |
| Mathematica | Tricycle is currently licensed to run mathematica. |
Host ajeeb has a CD-RW burner, for folks wanting to burn CDs in a UNIX (Linux) environment.
| Access & Use | Ajeeb uses the standard gws Linux password and group files, but it does not necessarily have the same software setup as other gws Linux machines. Hence, ajeeb is not considered available for general cycles, but just for burning CDs. |
|---|---|
| Location | Ajeeb is located in CSE 281. The CD-RW is the black unit in the lower external drive bay. You may need to open the swinging door to gain access to the drive. | CD Burn Software | Linux uses the mkisofs and cdrecord programs for creating CDs. See here for a quick guide to the basic operation of these programs. Consult the man pages for further details. |
| Imaging Space | Two world writable directories are available on ajeeb:
|
| Cleanup! | After you burn a CD you are expected to clean up files in /image/burn-image and /image/userdir so that the space is available for someone else to use. Cleanup is your responsibility and this service can only be provided if everyone who uses it cooperates. |
| Media | You must provide your own media when using the CD writer on ajeeb. |
Host ajeeb also has a DVD+RW burner, for folks wanting to burn DVDs in a UNIX (Linux) environment.
